Stearns made quite a few saw vises, and this was one of their better ones. The jaws are 10 1/2" wide, and meet up fairly well. There is a groove for a rubber or leather strip to reduce vibration when filing. Still clamps a blade tightly. A previous owner brazed a larger plate to the foot that clamps onto a bench or board. Will clamp onto a board up to 2 1/4" thick. The jaws tilt from side to side, as well as up to about 15° towards the rear (like most saw vises, it will not tilt forward). No cracks or repairs.
Suitable for smaller joinery saws. I would not try using it (or most other vintage saw vises, for that matter) for larger saws. They will work in a pinch, but very few of them feel sturdy when filing larger teeth. That said, this is an inexpensive way to start down the saw sharpening slope. If you decide you like the path, you can upgrade when you're ready.
